WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY

400 years ago two of the most well-known writers of world literature died: Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. That's why we are celebrating Book Day today! Although in England they celebrate it on the 1st Thursday of March!

The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain. The original idea was of the Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes, who died on this date.

In 1995 UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on 23 April, as the date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

Ledicia (3º ESO A) has very kindly recorded a brief podcast about William Shakespeare's life. We hope you like and find it interesting!

It is said that two geniuses of World Literature died on 23rd April, 1616. This means that this year we are celebrating the 400th anniversary of their death. Any ideas?

YES! You're right. They are William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes!
