The 60th anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation

This summer marks the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952 and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. Celebratory events include a special exhibition at Buckingham Palace and a Coronation Festival.

Regent Street, London's high-end shopping district, looks like Coronation Street today a Britain gets ready for another of its celebratory spectacles to honor Queen Elizabeth II. It was dreary weather but the rows of purple-and-gold crown-festooned banners flying over Regent Street brightened the west London thoroughfare where Benetton and Burberry reign.

The banners commemorate the 60th anniversary of the queen's coronation, on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey, and will remain up for two months until the celebration culminates in a four-day coronation festival July 11-14.
